Mad Scientist
The mad inventor/scientist is a stock character of popular fiction, either villainous or benign. Whether insane, eccentric, or simply bumbling, the mad scientist is often working with some utterly fictional technology in order to forward their schemes. Alternatively, they don't see the evil that will ensue from the hubris of "playing God". Modern mad scientist depictions are often satirical and humorous rather than critical. Not all crazy scientists are evil or villains. Some are actually positive characters such as Doc Brown in the popular Back To The Future film trilogy. Taken from Wikipedia.

The mad inventor/scientist character first appeared against a backdrop of rapid scientific and technological advances in the novels of the 1800s. 19th century mad scientists such as Mary Shelley's Victor Frankenstein (1818) and Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll (1886) were born out of a fear of the unknown power of modern science. Characters like Dr Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll were famously portrayed in 1930/40s horror films and it is these iconic images that have formed the blueprint of the archetypal deranged scientist.
